This platform serves as a bridge between the district administration and our valued residents, providing a space for engagement and ensuring transparent access to information on services and opportunities within our community.
Chembe District was formally established in 2012, following a presidential declaration by His Excellency the late President Michael Chilufya Sata. Carved out of Mansa District in Zambia’s Luapula Province, Chembe now stands as a distinct region rich in potential and community spirit.
The district comprises a single constituency, Chembe Constituency, and is divided into eight wards, each represented by an elected councillor. Our local leadership body consists of eleven councillors in total, including the Council Chairperson and the respected traditional leaders, Senior Chief Kalasa Lukangaba and Chief Kasoma Lwela.
Geography & Location
Situated at coordinates 11° 56′ South and 28° 44′ East, Chembe District lies on a plateau stretching along the Luapula River. It shares borders with Mansa and Milenge Districts and enjoys an international boundary with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The district headquarters is located approximately 90 kilometres from Mansa, the provincial capital, and is situated along the Chembe-Mansa Road, about five kilometres from the Chembe Mwanawasa Bridge.
Landscape & Agriculture
The district features high, flat terrain, with lower-lying areas along the Luapula River that are fertile yet prone to waterlogging during the rainy season. This environment supports the cultivation of rice and bananas. Staple crops such as cassava and maize are also grown, though they face challenges due to longer maturation periods. The area is characterized by wetlands and numerous streams that feed into the Luapula River, and includes the vital Shamendi Forest Reserve—a key water catchment zone. Soils are predominantly loam, offering strong potential for diverse farming activities.
Climate & Ecology
Chembe benefits from a favorable climate, with an average annual rainfall of about 900mm and mean temperatures around 28°C. The vegetation is primarily open Miombo woodland, dominated by species such as Brachystegia and Julbernadia.
This website reflects our commitment to keeping you informed, connected, and engaged as together we shape the future of Chembe District.
